Boris Furtula was born on June 16, 1978, in Kragujevac, Serbia. He completed all levels of schooling in his native town. After finishing undergraduate studies in chemistry (in 2002) at the Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, he joined the research group of Professor Ivan Gutman. There, he was introduced to the field of mathematical chemistry. Under the guidance of Professor Gutman, he obtained a M.Sc. in 2005 and a Ph.D. in 2007, both in chemistry.

Boris Furtula is a Full Professor of Physical chemistry, Chemometrics and Cheminformatics at the University of Kragujevac. Professor Furtula is also Managing Editor of the journal MATCH Communications in Mathematical and in Computer Chemistry. He was elected as a full member of the International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry in 2019. Currently he is acting as the Secretary of the IAMC. Furtula’s research interests span from investigation of stability of polycyclic aromatic compounds to the exploration of the quality of molecular structure descriptors. So far, he published 165 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 8 technical papers, 1 monograph, 1 textbook, 12 book chapters and co-edited 8 scientific monographs. According to the Web of Science, his publications are cited over 6600 times (average citations per article is more than 41) and his current h-index is 39 (data gathered on August 4, 2025). According to Stanford list Boris Furtula is among "World top 2%" scientists (more details can be found at https://topresearcherslist.com. Together with Professor Gutman, Boris Furtula was awarded by the Serbian Ministry of Science for the best scientific monograph in 2010.
